Hatton W. Sumners Scholarships

Oklahoma City University School of Law is one of only two law schools in the country to receive the generous support of the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation to assist in the establishment of several full-tuition scholarships for incoming law students.   In addition to full-tuition, recipients of these awards receive book and living stipends. To receive consideration, interested students should complete the separate HWS Scholarship application by February 15th.   Finalists for these prestigious scholarships will be invited back to the law school to interview with the Sumners Foundation Board of Trustees in March. To be eligible for a Sumners Scholarship, an applicant must be a resident of or a student/graduate of a college or university in one of the following states: Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Louisiana, Nebraska, or New Mexico.   Additionally, an applicant must have a completed law school application and LSDAS report on file on or before the February 1st scholarship application deadline.

Selection is based on academic proficiency, extracurricular achievement and demonstrated the capacity for public service.  While there is no minimum LSAT or GPA requirement to be selected, applicants selected to interview for these scholarships have an LSAT and GPA in the top quarter of our class.  Nevertheless, all applications are welcome and will be reviewed in early February by members of the administration and faculty.  Approximately twenty applicants will be selected and invited to interview with Trustees of the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation in March.

To begin the selection phase, an applicant must complete a Sumners Scholarship application, draft the required essay, and submit three letters of recommendation.   Letters submitted to LSAC may be used for your scholarship application, but an applicant’s file will not be completed until all three letters of recommendation have been submitted.

Sumners Scholarships are renewable awards.  Recipients of these awards must be enrolled in the full-time program and must maintain a cumulative GPA average in the upper one-third of their class.

Applicants are encouraged to visit the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation to learn more about these scholarships and the Foundation.
