PROGRAM & POLICIES INFORMATION
Eligibility & Enrollment
To enroll in a summer abroad program, a student must be in academic good standing, and the student must have completed one year of full time or part time law study. For example, if you began your law school career in the Fall of 2006, you will be allowed to enroll in a summer abroad program, but if you are no longer in good academic standing when grades for the Spring 2007 semester have been turned in, then you will not be allowed to continue to study in the summer abroad program. Applications for each program can be found on their respective web pages, in the Dean’s Office, and in the Student Services Office.
As with all classes, space in each program is limited, and available space will be assigned on a first come, first served basis through the filing of an application and payment of a deposit. Registration for the summer abroad programs will begin before registration for on-campus summer courses.
The required OIE Application includes a Special Events Waiver and Release Agreement Form. You will not be allowed to attend the program unless you have signed and submitted this waiver.
Academic Policies
Stetson University College of Law academic policies govern all programs, with the exception of the China program. Please note that Stetson grades on a 4.0 scale. An OCU LAW student must earn a 2.0 (“C” equivalent) or better to receive credit for the program. The grade will be recorded on the students transcript as Cr/NCr and is not included in the grade point average.
A comprehensive final examination will be administered. Please arrange your travel schedule so that it does not conflict with the final examination. No arrangements for exams taken prior to the regularly scheduled exam date and time will be made for travel conflicts.
Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities
If you have received approval for accommodations at OCU LAW, then you will continue to receive accommodations overseas. However, students with physical disabilities should consider that international universities and non-U.S. cities may not be equipped to accommodate all individuals. Stetson will make every effort to reasonably accommodate special needs of applicants.

COSTS & TRAVEL INFORMATION
Financial Assistance
The OCU Office of International Education (OIE) provides some limited scholarships for OCU students studying abroad. An OIE scholarship application is included with the OIE application form available from each program webpage. Law students are advised to turn in their OIE scholarship applications as soon as possible.
Students may utilize federal and/or private, credit-based student loans to cover approved educational expenses related to summer abroad programs. Eligible expenses include, but are not necessarily limited to: tuition and fees, room and board, airfare, and miscellaneous personal expenses. OCU LAW students may contact the Student Financial Services Office at 405-208-5211 for additional information and required forms relating to the application process.
Direct Deposit Refund Policy
OCU LAW will defer to Stetson any decisions regarding the refund of housing and tuition deposits for documented medical emergencies, or unexpected military deployments. If an OCU LAW student learns while studying abroad that his or her cumulative grade point average has fallen below 4.25, the student will be automatically academically dismissed from the law school and will not be permitted to continue study in the summer program. In that event, the student’s tuition for the summer abroad program will not be refunded, nor will any other expenses incurred by the student in connection with the summer abroad program be refunded, and the student will remain obligated for any housing costs contracted for.
Cancellation Policy
OCU LAW and its co-sponsors reserve the right to cancel the program for low enrollment, with full refund, by May 1. OCU LAW and its co-sponsors may cancel or shorten any program because of extreme insecurity resulting from the forces of nature or political unrest.
Passport & Visa Information
Passports: Students are responsible for obtaining a passport. Passports should be valid for six months beyond the end of the program date. U.S. passport information and forms are available at your local U.S. courthouse or at: http://www.travel.state.gov/passport.
Visas: Students are not required to obtain a visa for any program, with the exception of the China program.
China
Visas: Everyone is responsible for obtaining their own visa for China. Students should apply for a visa as soon as they are accepted to the program to allow sufficient processing time. If you do not obtain a visa in a timely manner you will not be able to participate in the program. In previous years students have used Capitol Visa Services Company to obtain their visas. As of February, 2009 Capitol required the following to obtain a visa to China:
- A passport valid for at least six months. (Passport must be signed.)
- Two completed Chinese Visa Application Forms (second form can be a copy). In box 2.1 of the Application you must mark “Tourism” and not “Study.”
- One passport-size photo taken within the past six months
- Contact Capitol Visa Services to determine the fees. As of February, 2000 the fees totaled between $213-243 ($130-$160 Chinese Embassy Fee, $60 Capitol Visa Services fee, $23 shipping).
- A completed Capitol Visa Services Service Request Form.
Please remember that you are not applying for “student visa”. This is only required if you are being awarded academic credit by a Chinese University. Please make sure you apply for a tourist visa. Also, please make sure that you request a 60 day visa, or longer if you intend to stay longer. Please note that Hong Kong is treated as part of China for some purposes but not others. If you enter China—then travel to Hong Kong, you will not be permitted to reenter China unless you have visa that permits a double entry.
Liability and Insurance
Neither OCU LAW nor its co-sponsors will be responsible for personal injury, illness, or loss or damage to personal property resulting from participation the program. Participants are required to obtain appropriate health insurance and to take responsibility for their personal health and safety when traveling.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The programs offered by Oklahoma City University School of Law are co-sponsored with Stetson University College of Law, the University of Tulsa College of Law, the Mercer University Walter F. George School of Law, and Charleston School of Law. The deadline for submissions of applications is April 15, 2012. However, if there are still openings in any of the programs after that date, we will continue to accept applications until the programs are full. Also, the programs are filled on a first come first served basis, so programs may fill up before the application deadline.
Note: If, while studying abroad, your cumulative GPA falls below 1.7525, you will be automatically academically dismissed from the law school and will not be permitted to continue study in the summer abroad program. In that event, your tuition will not be refunded, nor will any other expenses incurred in connection with the summer abroad program be refunded, and you will remain responsible for any housing costs contracted for.
SUMMER ABROAD PROGRAMS SPONSORED BY OTHER LAW SCHOOLS
Students must petition for permission to study abroad in a summer program sponsored by another law school. The Summer Petition form is available from the Student Services web page.
Petitions are due to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs no later than April 15 for summer and fall semester programs and no later than October 15 for spring semester programs.
If your petition is granted you must turn in the following documents to the Associate Dean’s Office before leaving for your program:
- Office of International Education (OIE) Application for Non-OCU Program (including authorization to have $30 OIE fee charged to your Bursar account).
- Three copies of your passport
- A copy of your current International Student Identify Card (ISIC Card) available from the OCU Office of International Education.
- A copy of your travel itinerary.
- You must also attend the mandatory OCU OIE Orientation. You will be informed of the date, time, and location of the Orientation.
