WATCH NOW: “The Real Truth About Death Panels: Comparative Effectiveness Research and Health Reform Legislation”

Published in News, Video on February 24th, 2011 by Nathan Gunter

UPDATE: The slides from Professor Kinney’s presentation are now available online.

With a grant from INTEGRIS Health, OCU LAW will present a series of lectures on the intersection of health care and law. Titled “The Real Truth About Death Panels: Comparative Effectiveness Research and Health Reform Legislation,” the inaugural presentation in the series was given by Eleanor DeArman Kinney, Hall Render Professor of Law and Co-Director of the William S. and Christine S. Hall Center for Law and Health at Indiana University School of Law – Indianapolis. Professor Kinney spoke Tuesday, February 22, in the Homsey Family Moot Courtroom in OCU’s Sarkeys Law Center. The lecture was worth 1 hour of Oklahoma Continuing Legal Education credit.

“Health care now accounts for 16-18% of economic activity in our country,” said OCU LAW Dean Lawrence K. Hellman. “Law impacts how health care advances and how it is distributed. It is vital for those involved in the health care sector of the economy, the lawyers who represent them, and policy makers who regulate them to carefully examine the relationship between law and public health. We are grateful to INTEGRIS Health for enabling OCU LAW to bring leading thinkers like Eleanor Kinney to our community to stimulate consideration of these important issues.”

Eleanor D. Kinney is one of the nation’s leading experts on health law. After earning her law degree and a master’s degree in public health, she served as program analyst for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C. Immediately prior to joining the faculty in 1984, she was assistant general counsel of the American Hospital Association. A widely published author and respected lecturer on the subjects of America’s health care system, medical malpractice, health coverage for the poor, and issues in administrative law, Kinney published Protecting American Health Care Consumers (Duke University Press 2002) and edited the Guide to Medicare Coverage Decision-Making and Appeals (ABA Publishing 2002). Kinney has served as a consultant to the Administrative Conference of the United States, President Clinton’s Task Force for Health Care Reform, and the Indiana Commission on Health Care for the Working Poor. She has been appointed by the governor of Indiana to the Executive Board of the Indiana State Department of Health and to other task forces and advisory boards. She currently serves as chair of the Patient Safety Subcommittee of the Indiana Commission on Excellence in Health Care. During 1999-2000, Kinney taught and conducted research as a Fulbright Fellow at the National University of La Plata in La Plata, Argentina. She founded the school’s Latin American Law Summer Program and served as its executive director until 2007. She also serves as an adjunct professor at the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs and at the IU School of Medicine.
